Quest for Condiments: Tartar Sauce & Cocktail Sauce

When eating foods like fish sticks, the meal experience is just not the same without condiments.  I like both tartar sauce and cocktail sauce, so I decided it was high time to try to make these two condiments.  Making Paleo Indugences's fish sticks, gave me the perfect opportunity to make both.  I prepared both of these sauces in advance of cooking my fish so that they could refrigerate a bit.

Paleo Comfort Foods Tartar Sauce

I decided to try the tartar sauce recipe from Paleo Comfort Foods: Homestyle Cooking for a Gluten-Free Kitchen.  I did not see where the Mayfield's had posted this recipe online or that anyone else has, so I hope you have their book!

I gathered my ingredients.  This recipe is a lot quicker, of course, if you already have some paleo mayonnaise prepared.

I diced up some pickles and added them to my paleo mayonnaise.

The next step calls for grated onion.  As my knuckles tend to find their way to the grater's edge, I put on my safety glove and grated away.  I don't think these gloves are completely cut proof, but if you are using sufficient care, you'll notice that the glove being cut before your fingers are.

And finally, I added some mustard.

I mixed everything up and here is the result.

Accessibility and Cost of Ingredients:  You should be able to find all of the ingredients, except for prepared paleo mayonnaise at the grocery store. Though it's super easy to make, wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy paleo mayo at the store? A girl can dream.

Preparation Time:  It took me about 10 minutes to prepare this sauce since I had mayo on hand.

The Paleo Review:  Thumbs up!  This sauce tasted as good or better than any store bought tartar sauce I've ever had.  Its super easy to whip up and worth the small time investment!

Make It Paleo Cocktail Sauce

Next, I made the Cocktail Sauce from Make it Paleo.  You can find it here.  This will be a really short mini review as it appears the few pictures I took have disappeared.  When I make it again, I'll update this post.  You should be able to find all of the ingredients to make this sauce at your big box grocery store.  It really is as simple as measuring and mixing up the ingredients.  No cooking required.  The recipe quotes a 5 minute preparation time and I'd say that's about right.

The Paleo Review:  Thumbs Up!  Again, a sauce as good or better than any I've had at a restaurant or purchased at the store.  Its super quick and easy to make.

I'd say my quest for good cocktail sauce and tartar sauce are over.  Do you have any condiments you miss since going paleo?
